Is there anything bad you could possibly say about Terranea Resort? I know I couldn’t find one either. With luxury beachfront accommodations, guest casitas, an award-winning spa, fitness center, numerous activities & 8 restaurants over 102-acres of land. You could stay just on the property for days and not get bored. It’s secluded on its own secluded cliffside haven.
I’m moving to Terranea, I know, I know I jokingly say this about a lot of properties, but this time I may actually be serious.
Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes, CA
The hotel itself is a Mediterranean-inspired design and though it’s located in Rancho Palos Verdes which is just south of Los Angeles, a coastal community away from the hustle and bustle. Terranea is so spread out that even when the hotel is sold out it never feels crowded. Their service is also 10/10, which I can tell you from working in the hospitality industry at a large and busy hotel is hard to do.
My favorite part? No matter where you are on the property, you can hear the ocean crashing on the shore and the waves breaking along the cliffs. It’s no secret that Terranea Resort was designed so that no matter where you are (sitting, walking, eating, relaxing, etc) you can truly enjoy the outdoors.
What to do at Terranea Resort
Since Terranea is an oceanfront resort, it’s a picturesque spot for all activities. Every morning I stayed there, we got up and went for a little hike/walk on a trail that goes right along the ocean. If you go to the North you’ll run into a lighthouse, whereas if you go to the South, you’ll run into tide pools. From golfing (they have their own golf course- the links), fitness classes (I took a cycling class that overlooked the ocean!), waterslides, to their world-class spa.
Speaking of the spa, I would recommend taking the term “treat yo self” very seriously during your stay at Terranea very seriously and very literal. I had a massage at the spa and I never wanted it to end. It is without a doubt pure bliss. Along with massages, you could also get facials, specialty body treatments, manicures and pedicures, and salon services. They have meditation and relaxation rooms, a steam room, a cold plunge, and a sauna. As I relaxed after my massage, I lounged in a chair overlooking the ocean while sipping on my margarita (after my green juice, of course, BALANCE!) and saw dolphins and whales go by.
Not to mention all the water sports – kayaking, fishing, surfing, paddle boarding, swimming, and hunting for the best seashells, and other ocean activities.
I chose to spend most of my days hopping from pool to pool to check out what pool has the best ocean view. Dramatic cliffs line the property which gives you the best ocean views and sunsets. Which is why it’s one of my favorite places to unwind with a cocktail/glass of wine during golden hour.
At night, the property is beautifully light with lights and fire pits. Don’t forget to bring your s’more stuff for cool ocean breezes by the fire.
What room type should you book at Terranea?
Honestly, there’s no bad room. No matter what room type you book you will get either a private balcony or patio and premium decor. All joking aside, if I could get ahold of their interior designer, I’d hire them to design and decorate my house.
The smallest guest room is 450 square feet, but then suites, casitas, bungalows, and villas go up from there.
I’ve stayed in an Oceanfront room, a bungalow, and a one-bedroom suite and they all have their own charm.
Restaurants at Terranea Resort
Since Terranea is a secluded hotel, they knew they needed to nail their restaurants out of the park, which of course they did. You can get anything from SoCal beach cuisine to highly rated fine dining. Though there are lots (8 to be exact) restaurants on property, I only ate at three of them, unless coffee from the coffee shop (sea beans) counts. Nelson’s, the Spa Cafe, and Catalina Kitchen – let me tell you they were all amazing.
I also learned that they grow the majority of their own fruits and vegetables on the property, they have a beehive for honey and make all their own pastries (even bagels) which is what I think truly makes the difference.
**sorry in advance for the blogger fail at not getting pictures of all my meals**
- Nelson’s: a more casual restaurant with ocean views and drool-worthy mahi-mahi tacos, lobster rolls, and chips with guacamole.
- Catalina Kitchen: with pool views and ocean views in the distance, the hotel’s main restaurant. You’ll get California/Mediterranean-inspired dishes, I recommend brunch and of course, the eggs Benedict.
- Spa Cafe: lighter lunch options served at the spa
- Bashi: an Asian-inspired restaurant with chicken dumplings and unbeatable sushi rolls like a classic (yet delicious) spicy tuna and innovative Terranea farm roll with red beet rice, seasonal vegetables, and balsamic.
- Mar’sel: upscale/fine dining eatery where the name comes from a play on the Spanish and French words for “sea” and “salt.” A twist on California cuisine.
There are also pool bites at the resort pool and Cielo point, lobby bar and terrace, and sea beans which is their coffee shop with also fresh-baked pastries, quiches, sandwiches, and homemade gelato.
Is Terranea family-friendly?
Yes!! I saw so many families with children young and old. They even have a waterslide, splash pad, and a kids club. Terranea also offers the option of both hotel and residential-style accommodations depending on your need. If you have a few kiddies, you may prefer the two-bedroom bungalows, three-bedroom casitas, and large villas for an unforgettable family vacation.
And don’t worry – the resort is pet-friendly too.
Is Terranea Resort Worth it?
Absolutely. From sunrise to sunset, Terranea shows off to prove it’s the quintessential getaway for everyone.
It’s arguably a place you need to experience at least once in your life. I couldn’t recommend a resort more highly. The location is unbeatable, the staff is exceptional, and the grounds/amenities take luxury to a whole new level. For me, it’s not a question of if but when I’ll be back to visit Terranea.
